ESQUECER SARAMAGO

ESQUECER SARAMAGO [TO FORGET SARAMAGO] – Twelve departures for an homage

I take my leave of the dead but will not forget them. To forget them, I believe, would be the first sign of death.

José Saramago. Manual of Painting and Calligraphy, 1977

[Translated from the Portuguese by Giovanni Pontiero]

ESQUECER SARAMAGO [TO FORGET SARAMAGO] is a collective text and image work reflecting, by means of a mosaic of graphic visions, the œuvre of the Portuguese recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book presents twelve projects by visual artists – eleven ESAD.CR students and alumni and a special guest, Pedro Penilo – all evoking, in their own aesthetic terms, fundamental texts of José Saramago.

Among the authors, some read Saramago in a crucial moment in their personal artistic path (Anabela Santos, Bruno Bogarim, Eunice Artur, Orphanus Lauro and Pedro Penilo). Others shared the experience of being new readers of the author of Baltasar and Blimunda (André Banha, André Graça Gomes, João Ferreira, Mónica Landim, Nuno Fragata and Ricardo Braz).

The Project has two components, book (edition) and itinerant exhibition-suitcase, aiming to adjust every artistic vision to its representation (choice of papers, lay-out, special finishing), in a whole that works out as a group Contemporary Art show. The itinerant-suitcase is a project by Biana Costa with André Teles. Inside one may find original works by the artists as well as reproductions, together with a numbered exemplar of the book. It is a boite-en-valise and at the same tome a relational event (the circulation of the piece between several institutions and spaces welcoming the ‘forgetting’ of Saramago.

The itinerant exhibition comprises performative-musical moments during the installing of the works. It would be presented between October 31stand November 14thin the José Saramago Library in Leiria. The book was launched the 12th of December, in the presence of Pilar del Rio. Several itinerances would follow.
