On LIGHTCRAFT III, with guest artists Kasjo Studio and Joachim Slugocki
Put another way, there is evidence to suggest that our world and everything in it – from snowflakes to maple trees to falling stars and spinning electrons – are also only ghostly images, projections from a level of reality so beyond our own it is iterally beyond both space and time.

LIGHTCRAFT arrives inconspicuously to its third edition. Step by step, a delicate and simultaneously problematizing approximation to the arts of Light is defining a specific territory of revelations. It is as if the Palace would be charting ‘Lights to Come’, uncovering yet another trait of its drive for Contemporaneity.
Let’s face it. This doesn’t happen every day. Neither every year for that matter. Belmonte is a turnpike of creative visions and artistic experiments, but it is exceptionally rewarding to host an artist duo who is shining their light in countless Festivals worldwide. Joachim Slugocki and Kasia Malejka started this cooperative urban intervention aesthetic almost a decade ago in their hometown – Torun – in fact, in the second edition of the Light Festival SKYWAY. Now, Palácio Belmonte is proudly hosting possibly the last work of this series, just before the duo moves into other directions.
A few words contextualizing this years’ programme. These artists’ works are always realized in direct response to the architecture they interrupt and comment. Their precise and conceptually clear model for interpelating the place is paradoxically both the sign of an alien presence and an easily recognizable geometric order expanding the character of the very space. Colour is part of the language – a psychedelic palette revealing a disturbing, yet mesmerizing aspect of artificial illumination. In the end, the performance of perception is triggered by the drawing composition. The spectator’s vision becomes the informal and playful resonance of these moving strings’ material life.
SPECTRAL is the name of this new work by Kasjo Studio, a large place-specific project for the Belmonte Patio, the iconic urban gem located in Castelo. It is accompanied by the presentation of 16 small-scale paintings in the Cultural Café and a nano-scale intervention at a door (n. 16 – what a wonderful coincidence) leading to the tunnel. This latter work consists in a line of green light that, hitting the dark floor, disperses in all directions. Fluorescent dots of light. We may then try to understand what this light is made of (Painting? Video?), but soon what’s at stake is our will and capacity to enter a new world of abstract events, Kasjo’s cosmos. This is an art courting the weight of the world only to tear it apart like an holographic incision.

Por outras palavras, há provas que sugerem que o nosso mundo, e tudo nele – dos flocos de neve às estrelas cadentes, passando pelos carvalhos e o electrões em movimento giratório – não passam de imagens espectrais, projecções de um nível de realidade tão para lá do nosso próprio que se encontra literalmente para lá do espaço e do tempo.

LIGHTCRAFT chega inconspicuamente à sua terceira edição. Passo a passo, uma aproximação ao mesmo tempo delicada e ao mesmo tempo problematizante das artes da Luz está definir um território de revelações. É como se o Palácio estivesse a cartografar ‘Luzes por vir’, descobrindo mais uma dimensão do seu desejo de Contemporaneidade.
Convenhamos. Isto não acontece todos os dias. Ou sequer todos os anos. O Belmonte é uma placa giratória de visões criativas e experimentos artísticos, mas é excepcionalmente gratificante albergar um duo de artistas que está a brilhar em incontáveis festivais em todo o mundo. Joachim Slugocki e Kasia Malejka iniciaram esta estética de intervenção urbana há quase uma década, na sua cidade natal – Torun –, Na verdade, por ocasião da segunda edição do Festival de Luz SKYWAY. Agora. É o Palácio Belmonte que tem a honra de receber aquela que é provavelmente uma das últimas apresentações desta série, antes de ambos os artistas partirem em outras direcções.
Duas palavras para contextualizar o programa deste ano. As obras destes artistas são sempre realizadas em resposta directa à arquitectura que interrompem e comentam. O modelo que utilizam para interpelar o espaço é preciso e conceptualmente claro; é, paradoxalmente, tanto o sinal de uma presença estranha como uma ordem geométrica facilmente reconhecível que expande o carácter do próprio espaço. A cor é parte da linguagem – uma paleta psicadélica que revela um aspecto perturbador, e no entanto hipnotizante, da iluminação artificial. Ao final, a performance da percepção é despoletada pela composição do desenho. A visão do espectador torna-se a ressonância informal e lúdica da vida material deste fios que se movem.
SPECTRAL é o nome deste novo trabalho do Kasjo Studio. Trata-se de uma projecto sítio-específico de grandes dimensões, concebido para o Pátio Belmonte, uma icónica pérola urbana na proximidade do Castelo. É acompanhado pela apresentação de 16 pinturas de pequenas dimensões no Cultural Café e de uma nano-intervenção numa porta – o número 16, maravilhosa coincidência – situada no túnel. Esta obra consiste num fio de luz verde que atinge o chão escuro e se dispersa em todas as direcções. Gotas de luz fosforescente. Podemos então tentar perceber de que é feita esta luz (Pintura? Vídeo?), mas breve o que está em jogo é a nossa vontade e capacidade de entrar num novo mundo de eventos abstractos, o cosmosde Kasjo. Esta é uma arte que faz a corte ao peso do mundo, apenas para o rasgar como uma incisão holográfica.
