TERROIR GRAFFITI

It was 2009. The then called FCT/UNL Library in the Campus of Caparica, at the Facultoty of Sciences and Technology of Nova University in Lisbon, had the idea to realize an exhibition/intervention/debate on the theme ‘Graffiti – Urban Art’. The goal was to promote institutional and scientific openness concerning this artistic interventionism, articulating the fields of art, urban life and culture. TERROIR/GRAFFITI was born.

TERROIR-GRAFFITI-1-EXTRAMUROS

Graffiti, Almada, 2009.

The exhibition encompassed several dimensions: extramuros  [following writers in their everyday activity, an action which resulted in the production of a documentary], intramuros [the painting of a mural in the perimeter of the Caparica campus] and indoor [Visual Arts ephemeral installation]. The website sums it all up [in Portuguese].

TERROIR-GRAFFITI-2-CREW

Crew, Almada, 2009.

In such a cooperative framework, each participant author was willing to hear about the motivations and procedures of the others. New work was produced: by Anabela Santos, the visual artist who accepted the challenge to articulate her language with the world of graffiti, and by Tiago Beijoco and Luís Nascimento, two writers interested in aligning their artistic production with a reflexive dimension. Tiago Craft was a crucial informant of all this (at the time) innovative initiative.

Anabela Santos [work in progress], Almada, 2009.
