Varanasi, in India, is the oldest city in the world. Kashi is the City of Light. When I came back to my country and my city, SMART CITIES magazine in Lisbon gave me the opportunity to write a few words on the experience of travelling along the ghats of the most mystical of places.
Here my simple but sincere a reflection on the names, essence and challenges of Banaras, around the notion of Intelligent City. The text is also a very simple tribute to people I’ve met in the trip, some of the most bright and illuminated beings I’ve ever met. Yes, it’s in Portuguese. Anyway, much of the information introduced in my text came from extraordinary talks with friends Suresh K. Nair (artist and lecturer at Banaras Hindu University) and Sameer Singh (freelance photographer) [in the picture], whose insights met mine from the very first eye contact and the following conversation. Varanasi, na Índia, é a mais antiga cidade viva do mundo. Kashi é a Cidade d’A Luz. Quando regressei ao meu país e à minha cidade, a SMART CITIES em Lisboa deu-me a oportunidade de escrever algumas palavras acerca da experiência da viagem ao longo dos ghats do mais místico dos lugares. Este artigo é uma reflexão sobre os nomes, a essência e os desafios de Kashi/Banaras/Varanasi.
O texto, publicado na revista SMART CITIES #17, inaugurando a rúbrica ‘Cidades de Relance’, sugere a pertinência do conceito de Cidade Inteligente. Mas é também um tributo singelo a pessoas que encontrei na aventura, alguns dos seres mais brilhantes e iluminados que alguma vez conheci e de quem obtive parte essencial da informação: Suresh K.
