An exhilarating moment. Dropping by Belmonte Palace for one more conversation with landscape collector Frédéric Coustols, the experience of waiting was interrupted by the semblance of a book lying on the coffee table. The title couldn’t be more plain: Azulejos à Mesa | Azulejos in Restaurants. But inside, in just a few spreads, there it is: the words by Rosário Salema de Carvalho are courted by impressive images of this extraordinary Palace. And there they are, landing in a book as if coded messages calling us to some parallel world, the works by Jana Matejkova-Middleton, produced in cooperation with Rory Middleton in the context of the first edition of LightCraft Belmonte. In the Music Room, the luminescent painting “Her Silent Sonata”, a most delicate take on the spatial character of the place: it «opens up a dialogical space between the architectural features of the Palace and the decorative elements characteristic of the Belmonte interiors, eluding to the tradition of embroidery that took place over the centuries within these walls.» And in the magnificent Maria Ursula Ballroom, there’s that passage on the left which looks more like a visual aftereffect than reality itself. A portal do art, that’s what it is. The work is called “Outside over there” and it «invites the viewer to open the door of imagination and enter the secret and mysterious worlds out there hiding behind our “ordinary” yet extraordinary lives.»

Ao ir ter ao Palácio Belmonte para mais uma conversa com o coleccionador de paisagens Frédéric Coustols, a experiência da espera foi interrompida pela aparição de um livro sobre a mesa. O título não podia ser mais singelo: Azulejos à Mesa | Azulejos in Restaurants. Mas no interior, num par de spreads, ali estava: as palavras de Rosário Salema de Carvalho acompanhadas por imagens deste extraordinário Palácio. E ali estavam elas, aterrando num livro como como se mensagens em código chamando-nos para um mundo paralelo, as obras de Jana Matejkova-Middleton, produzidas em cooperação com Rory Middleton no contexto da primeira edição do evento LightCraft Belmonte. Na Sala de Música, a pintura luminescente “Her Silent Sonata”, uma extremamente delicada abordagem do carácter espacial do lugar: abrindo um espaço dialogal entre os traços arquitectónicos do Palácio e os elementos decoartivos característicos dos seus interiores, aludindo à tradição do brocado que teve lugar entre aquelas paredes durante séculos.» E na magnificente Sala de Baile Maria Ursula há aquela passagem à esquerda que parece mais um efeito especial que a própria realidade. Um portal para a arte, é o que é. A peça chama-se “Outside over there” e «convida o espectador a abrir a porta da imaginação e entrar nos secretos e misteriosos mundos que se escondem por detrás das nossas ‘quotidianas’ e no entanto extraordinárias vidas.»
